Climate

Adelaide Airport Limited (AAL) understands that we are living in a carbon constrained world, which demands that businesses address the risks associated with climate change and energy. AAL’s commitment to managing and minimising carbon emissions is underpinned by its Decarbonisation Strategy, which covers both Adelaide and Parafield Airports.

A mature greenhouse gas accounting system forms the foundation of AAL’s carbon management program and is essential in measuring progress against reduction targets. The system is verified each year through the Airports Council International (ACI), Airports Carbon Accreditation (ACA). In 2025 Parafield Airport became the first airport in Australia (simultaneously along with Adelaide Airport) to achieve Level 5 in the ACA. Level 5 is the highest level of the ACA and recognises that the airport has achieved a greater than 90% reduction in emissions, offsetting residual emissions through certified Australian Carbon Credit Units, and is actively engaging with stakeholders to reduce its scope 3 emissions (those outside of its direct operational control, such from jet fuel).

Energy

At Parafield, AALs electricity [JK2.1]is mostly consumed by the office building, street lighting and airfield lighting. AAL is achieving improved energy efficiency through initiatives such as LED lighting, sensor-operated lighting and smart heating and cooling operation and upgrades. AAL’s electricity is purchased from 100% renewable electricity, generated from a South Australian wind farm.

In an ongoing effort to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions, AAL continues to identify and implement cost effective energy efficiency initiatives, expand preventative maintenance programs in line with development activity, and pursue opportunities to increase onsite renewable energy generation.

Electrification is a key pathway in reducing carbon emissions across the airport. By transitioning traditionally carbon intensive operations to cleaner electric[JK3.1] alternatives, AAL is supporting long term emissions reduction and more sustainable operations. While electricity use at Parafield may increase over time as part of this transition, this reflects a positive outcome, — replacing higher emissions fuels with lower emissions electricity, increasingly supported by renewable energy.

Recognising that a significant proportion of energy consumption is under the direct control of individual airport businesses, AAL works closely with tenants and stakeholders to promote energy efficient practices and encourage the adoption of clean energy principles across the precinct. .
